Dear colleagues and friends,
Two major events in the second half of 2025.
First, some sad news: our first honorary president and founder of the Ricketts Society, Carl Gugino, has passed away at the age of 96, after a long and fulfilling life. We were fortunate to have his teachings for over 40 years, and we look back on his life in this issue. We hope to pay tribute to him in person, for those who knew him, in the lead-up to our next conference.
The second event was our Colmar congress, perfectly organized by the "East Sisters": Mireille Biegel, Laure Damery, Gaëlle Harter, and Sophie Laquille. I must admit that the announcement of the theme at the Rennes congress had me a little worried, fearing it would be too far removed from orthodontics. Well, some were wrong: THOSE WHO DIDN'T COME! We learned a great deal, applicable to our practices and our daily lives. The topic was innovative, original, and risky; it was an enriching congress in every respect, with fascinating speakers, so a big congratulations to them and to the SBR Est for taking this risk and putting on such a high-level congress.
It's impossible to escape all these endocrine disruptors, but let's focus on a few actions to improve our lives and those of our patients. For example, planting a tree at the start of each treatment or asking our patients to return their aligners after use (they are contaminated waste); filtered tap water is better than bottled water; plastic packaging isn't the best for our food; retainer bonding releases toxic products found in saliva for 24 hours after application, and many other small things: every little bit helps.
Not forgetting the 2025 Olympics, which brought together more than 2000 practitioners and in which the SBR, as always, took part with sessions organised with the Cepog and the SFODF.
We continue to present clinical cases from beyond our borders. Following our international issue last June, a Vietnamese practitioner has published a case in our journal. He tells us a bit about his training, orthodontics in his country, and his practice. Perhaps a trip there someday?
The Julien Philippe prize is also being celebrated, with the publication of the winning thesis and posters of the three winning thesis titles.
And let's talk about the future too!
The interfaculty week will take place at the end of April in Strasbourg, and the SBR will supervise second-year residents. Our regional meetings will be held throughout the first half of 2026 (program in this issue).
It's already well underway: we'll be meeting in Barcelona on October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, 2026 for our annual congress: "Orthodontics and Surgery: The New Landscape." The Southwest office, along with the congress's scientific president, Maxime Rotenberg, is leading us across the Pyrenees: Barcelona is easily accessible, and the scheduled speakers are renowned and international (French, Japanese, Vietnamese, and of course, Spanish). So, publish your "orthodontic surgery" cases in the June 2026 issue of the journal!
And we'll have tapas and sangria, but remember to book VERY, VERY quickly! (Registration opens in early January 2026.)
It's also time to wish you a wonderful 2026, and we hope to see many of you in Barcelona and at our regional meetings. Participating in the SBR is the best way to keep it alive and growing. All the board members work hard, and the success of these meetings is their greatest reward.
Yours bioprogressively,
A cordial Saludo de Barcelona Radiante (it’s Catalan!)
Patrick Guézénec,
President of SBR
Dear Friends,
The first half of 2025 was marked by our numerous regional meetings, reflecting the vitality of our Society.
In April, the inter-faculty week, held in Bordeaux, brought together all the orthodontic residents in France. The SBR (French Society of Orthodontics) supervised the second-year residents as they worked on a case study using Electrodent, alternating with presentations.
Thanks to Veronika Dercsar (and her father, Jozsef), Romain Poitel, private practitioners who dedicate their time to this; thanks to our academics, Delphine Wagner (Strasbourg), Nathalie Foumou-Moretti and Claire Averland-Dubois (Lille), Gauthier Dot (Paris), Maxime Rotenberg (Toulouse), Stéphane Renaudin and Marc-Henri Nivet (Nantes), Damien Brezulier (Rennes), and Cédric Bazert (Bordeaux). In short, a very comprehensive team! (See our lovely group photo opposite).
And now, COLMAR!
Join us for our annual congress, organized by the Eastern Region, in Colmar on September 12th, 13th, and 14th, on the theme: "Responsible Orthodontics: Commitments for Tomorrow."
We're hearing more and more about microplastic ingestion… what if our aligners are contributing to it?
The brain is said to be the organ that accumulates the most microplastics throughout our lives… What should we do with the resins used in our 3D printers? These are questions we need to examine, but without panicking.
The conferences are sure to be fascinating and engaging! But the Eastern Region office will certainly keep us relaxed!
Have a great holiday, and see you soon in Alsace.
Dear Colleague, dear friends
The SBR continues to grow, and we now have over 730 members with up-to-date dues as of December 31, 2024, including our DESODF residents and the Japanese members who have joined us.
If all members were up-to-date with their dues, we would be almost 900… a word to the wise for those who haven't yet paid!
You have just received the latest issue of our journal, featuring clinical cases, scientific articles, an interview with Stéphane Barthélémi explaining the requirements imposed by the qualification committee, and updates on the Society. A very comprehensive issue indeed, which I hope you will find engaging and which will also take you to Madagascar, where a group of dental students went to provide care.
The cases presented came from the West; this is a challenge for other regions! Which one will take it up?
2025 got off to a flying start with a regional meeting every month during the first half of the year : a great opportunity in your respective regions to reconnect with friends and exchange ideas.
Not forgetting the inter-faculty week for our residents, which will take place in early April in Bordeaux.
I still hope to be able to produce a very clinical, international issue of our next journal with case presentations from different backgrounds… even though it is very difficult to gather the practitioners contacted, but the life of the Society depends on you and your involvement.
The Eastern region is working hard to prepare a unique congress for us in September, in Colmar. You will soon find out more about the scientific program and the activities offered.
The Bureau renews its best wishes for this new year and
looks forward to seeing you at all the planned events.
Yours bioprogressively,
Dear Colleague, dear friends
With our congress in Rennes in September and the Orthodontics Days in Paris in November, 2024 concludes with a very rewarding experience.
Many thanks again to everyone who participated in these two events (lots of great photos from Rennes are on the bioprog.com website!).
A new feature during the Rennes congress was the video recording of the presentations, which allowed us to review them at our leisure—an experience to be repeated, even if some details need improvement.
2024 was also an election year. We elected our regional delegates electronically, who then appointed a regional board, and these regional boards then chose a national board. Our national secretary, Hanh Vuong-Pichelin, decided not to run for re-election. We extend the SBR's sincere gratitude to her for her many years of dedicated service to the Society.
Let me share a memory…
In February 2010, I was visiting Michel Delamaire in the hospital and told him that Hanh was our secretary. He simply gave me a thumbs-up to show his approval. Charlotte Eurin will be replacing her, assisted by Mireille Biegel as deputy (Mireille is likely to be very busy with the congress in Colmar in 2025!).
Éric Allouch was re-elected as treasurer, and I accepted a second term as president. A number of new members have joined the regional offices, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas for the future. Electronic voting is an extremely simple procedure; higher participation would have been welcome (it's worth noting that around twenty of our Japanese friends, members of the BSC and therefore of the SBR, voted).
The next elections will be held in September 2027. A new team, with new ideas.
2025 will be a busy year for regional meetings, not to mention an inter-faculty week
for our residents on April 7, 8, and 9 in Bordeaux, a congress in Colmar (September 12, 13, and 14), and the Orthodontics Days under the scientific chairmanship of Michel Le Gall (November 7, 8, and 9, 2025).
There's no shortage of projects; we've discussed a more international issue of our journal, bringing together cases treated from various perspectives, which would allow us to compare our approaches and experiences. And why not organize a trip to visit our Japanese friends, halfway between France and Japan? It was a tradition a few years ago, and the atmosphere was always very friendly.
2024 is coming to an end, I wish you excellent end-of-year celebrations, and may 2025 bring you
what you desire most in Serenity , Kindness and Success .
Good luck for 2025!
Yours bioprogressively,
Dear Colleague, dear friends
The 21st SBR congress has just concluded under beautiful Breton sunshine, which is becoming a welcome tradition for the SBR.
Judging by the feedback received this week, there is a high level of satisfaction, which doesn't surprise me given the quality of the speakers.
A huge THANK YOU to our thirteen speakers who presented top-notch work and were instrumental in this success, contributing their experience and passion. No matter how hard we try to organize a wonderful conference, if the scientific quality isn't there, the memory will be lackluster.
Even if the atmosphere is fantastic, even if the camaraderie is overflowing, the scientific content is paramount, and when all these elements come together, we can only say thank you.
Thank you also to all of you who were present in such large numbers, coming from all over France and abroad (from the United Arab Emirates to Japan), and to our colleagues who registered to follow the conferences via videoconference (Japan, USA, UAE, French overseas territories). These recordings are a new feature, undoubtedly with room for improvement, but it is so enriching to watch them again, at home, with a fresh perspective, to fully appreciate the content.
Thanks to Nathalie Hamel for her availability, essential to the organization of such an event, to Romy Moison, and to Michel Lemonnier for the organization
And finally, a huge thank you to our partners, always there for us, without whom we couldn't organize this kind of event. They are always welcome, whether during our breaks, meals, evenings, or our raffle!
Our two evenings at the Château de Montmuran and the Jacobins Convent allowed us to appreciate the friendly and festive atmosphere that exists among us all, to the sound of Breton music and the voice of our recurring singer (for those who were in Reims).
All that remains is for us to come down from our Everest (Thank you Nacer for this brilliant conference) and to prepare to go to Paris on November 7/8/9 for the Orthodontics Days.
And let's not forget that we're voting this year! To renew our regional offices, which will then elect the National office. Hanh VUONG-PICHELIN has decided not to run again as National Secretary, a position she has held for about fifteen years. We still hope to see her at future congresses to share some friendly evenings…
Vote, Participate, Come to Paris and Relive the congress through photos on our website and in our next Review at the end of the year.
It's up to you in the East to welcome us on September 12, 13 and 14, 2025 in Colmar.
Bioprogressively Your
Patrick GUEZENEC,
President of SBR
Dear Colleague, dear friends
To kick off 2024, let me first renew my best wishes: much success in your projects, and good health that leaves you with a "resourceful memory" resistant to the viruses that are still circulating. Let's hope that 2024 will be a year full of promise and peace.
The SBR's upcoming projects include holding the congress in Rennes on September 13th, 14th, and 15th , on the theme of "The Vertical Dimension: Excess and Insufficiency."
We are dedicating considerable time to this with the Western office, Romy Moison and Michel Le Monnier. The scientific program is finalized, and the preparations are underway, as a congress is also about the pleasure of getting together and sharing convivial moments with our sponsors. We hope to welcome our Japanese friends again this year, who have requested that members of the BSC (the Japanese SBR) be included within the SBR.
All of this is in addition to the regional meetings, the inter-faculty week (April 15th to 19th in Toulouse), and our Orthodontics Days (in November!), chaired by Michel Le Gall.
2024 will also be an important year for the SBR, as it's an election year: the various regional offices and the National Office will be renewed.
Get involved in your local areas! It's thanks to new members that the Society thrives and grows... experienced members can contribute their expertise, young people bring fresh ideas, and succession is all the easier when a generation retires. It's therefore important to prepare for the future so that young people don't arrive in an unfamiliar environment and are supported by their more experienced members.
We are constantly refining our magazine, our directory, our website, and our database. This requires ongoing work, and the contribution of the board members, Nathalie Hamel, and Sandra is crucial. We ask that each member do their part by notifying us of any changes to their address or email address… too many magazines are returned marked "unknown at this address."
As a famous sports journalist once said, GET INVOLVED!
Happy New Year 2024… see you in RENNES in September.
Smile Soon Rennes!
A president happy with this success in 2023:
Patrick GUEZENEC
Dear colleagues and friends,
2023 was an eventful year for the SBR, with numerous regional meetings and, most notably, a magnificent congress in Reims at the end of September to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Many thanks to the organizers Jean Michel Bonvarlet, Isabelle Marzin, Hanh Vuong-Pichelin, Eric Allouch, and the entire Ile-de-France regional committee. They set the bar very high to properly celebrate this jubilee, and it will be remembered as a resounding success in every respect: both scientifically, with a lineup of top-level speakers, and festively, in a most convivial atmosphere, with champagne certainly contributing to the success! We were delighted to see former presidents, honorary members, pillars of our congresses, and many young people, which confirms that the SBR is dynamic and forward-looking.
A very special thank you to our former presidents, who, although invited, were unable to attend: Guy Perrier d'Arc and Michel Bonnerot, who sent us a short message of encouragement for this congress, and to Carl Gugino, who sent us a video on the future of this profession "that he loves so much and to which he owes his longevity!"
A big thank you to our Japanese friends who came to participate in our congress, as well as in La Baule, Lyon, and Chantilly. This cooperation is becoming an extraordinary and enriching tradition, and many bottles of champagne were awarded sparkling "Kempai."
It is time to wish you all a wonderful holiday season.
May it bring you the very best, serenity, and good health.
Since we were in this city steeped in the history of the kings of France, instead of shouting "The King is dead, long live the King!" let us proclaim "Reims is dead, long live Rennes!"
The Western region awaits you on September 13th, 14th, and 15th, 2024 for the next chapter of our story: "The Vertical Dimension, Excess and Insufficiency."
Smile , Rennes is coming soon!
A president delighted with this success in 2023

Dear colleagues and friends,
May 11th was the anniversary of the creation of the SBR… 50 years!
The SBR is a beautiful fifty-year-old, and it's getting ready for the celebration organized by the Île-de-France region in Reims on September 29th, 30th, and October 1st. The bubbles are in the bottles and just waiting to fizz with everyone who comes! The program is being finalized; our Japanese friends will be coming in a group of eight, including two young speakers: Doctors Nagata and Nakatani.
French speakers are ready to go, eager to discuss cooperation (or the lack thereof!) in achieving our goals. Golf for enthusiasts, champagne for everyone, high-level presentations, and an orthodontic surprise... An opportunity to bring together many key members of the SBR and numerous young professionals (residents are always invited to the gala evening!) over a few glasses of champagne. The regional branches have been incredibly active during the first half of 2023, offering a wide range of topics to our members, and the SBR, at the national level, has been equally engaged, participating in the inter-faculty week held in Montpellier this year, during the last week of April.
The program included a case study on the 'electrodont', this wonderful 'typodont' which works without taking a bath, interspersed with lectures for the 56 second- year .
Thank you to those who are actively participating in this training.
After Reims, we will go straight to the Orthodontics Days organised by the FFO, from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 November, with on the program of the SBR a DPC session on "physical abuse of the child" with the SMODMF, a second with the Cepog on "the contribution of neuroscience to our practice as caregivers" and finally a third in collaboration with the College of Teachers on "eruption disorders from 5 to 7".
Our Japanese friends are in turn organizing the BSC anniversary during their annual congress, which will be held in Tokyo on November 19 and 20, 2023: 40th anniversary at the same time as the 7th International Orthodontic Conference, whose theme is: "The contribution of digital technology in the evolution of our Society".
Finally, the site has just been updated, after a few problems (please be patient!), you will find all the information about the congress and of course the form to register directly online.
Have a great summer, get plenty of rest, so you're in good shape when you arrive in Reims!
January 1, 2023
Dear colleagues and friends,
1973… 2023… 50 years. We have reached a certain level of maturity, and our Society, with over 800 members, is thriving. A long road has been traveled since its creation in 1973, thanks to dynamic colleagues who rightly believed in this promising concept initiated by Dr. Robert Ricketts. The Covid years did not diminish our desire to meet and organize our regional and national conferences against all odds. Arcachon in 2020, Cassis in 2021, and Annecy in 2022 were proof of this.
Let us hope that 2023 will be a great celebration for the SBR with rich regional meetings attended by the greatest number of people, crowned at the end of September 2023 with our jubilee in Reims.
The participation of the greatest number is living proof of this vitality and if we celebrate the historical past of the Ricketts Society, which became Bioprogressive, we can imagine, decide a future that is entirely up to us to realize.
The BSC, our Japanese counterpart, will be present in Reims and has already invited us to celebrate their 40th anniversary in Tokyo in November 2023. Having attended twice, I can assure you that comparing our practices is incredibly enriching. The visits of our Japanese colleagues, both in La Baule and Chantilly, have always been a source of memorable evenings and lasting friendships.
This is my dearest wish as President of the SBR. It is accompanied by wishes of happiness, health, and serenity for you and your families.
Long live SBR and welcome to Reims!
September 29/30 & October 1, 2023
Patrick GUEZENEC
President SBR
September 29, 2022
Dear colleagues and friends,
September was the time of a particularly pleasant meeting in Annecy. Jean-Luc OUHIOUN and Frédéric CHALAS organized a superb congress for us, during which we found ourselves in a consistently warm atmosphere, sharing convivial moments, from cocktails to the Gala, including mountain biking and the Priscilla Sisters. The scientific program was not to be outdone, with high-level speakers who all contributed their insights into the vast problem of TMJ
Thank you to our two organizers who masterfully led these days… with magnificent weather, just like in Arcachon and Cassis! Thank you to our speakers—orthodontists, dentists, doctors, posture specialists, surgeons, and physiotherapists—all of whom were fascinating. The diversity of specialties allowed us to approach TMJ disorders from every angle and broaden our perspectives. “Looking beyond the teeth” has always been a guiding principle of bioprogressive thinking, and several physiotherapists attended our conferences.
Thank you to our exhibitors and partners who help us organize these days, and thank you to all the many participants.
Annecy is behind us, and we'll see you in Reims in 2023 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the SBR (Sciences du Raynaud de Reims), founded in May 1973 by a group of orthodontists (Carl Gugino, Julien Philippe, Guy Perrier d'Arc, among others, who will forgive me for not listing them all). The first bulletin of the Ricketts Society was a typewritten, black-and-white leaflet, without photos, distributed to about fifty members. Marc Gérald is now preparing a magnificent journal; please feel free to contact him if you wish to publish cases treated bioprogressively.
We now have 817 members, almost all interns are members, more than 40 students in DU, three-quarters of our members are specialists or on their way to becoming so.
The SBR will be taking part in the 24th Orthodontics Days organized by the FFO next November with three co-organized sessions (on the hypomaxilli, the nose, and the tongue), we look forward to seeing many of you there!
Hoping that this year 2022 ends well for you and leads to a fiftieth anniversary year full of events.
We look forward to seeing you at our regional meetings and in Reims on September 29-30 and October 1, 2023
Bioprogressively Yours,
Patrick GUEZENEC
Dear Colleagues, dear Friends,
The health situation seems to be improving day by day, allowing us to envision a gradual return to our almost normal activity, while still respecting our health measures
We resumed our regional meetings, in person in Paris and virtually in Marseille. In March, we had the pleasure of welcoming Pierre Canal, who spoke with William Bacon about orthodontic finishing and a topic close to his heart: wisdom teeth. We welcomed him along with many former students who had benefited from his teaching and advice. He is retiring from his role as a high-level speaker after several decades during which he shared his experience with us. He is a pillar of the SBR, one of the few teachers of Ricketts' philosophy, and is taking a well-deserved retirement.
After a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus, we resumed our interfaculty week in April, which brings together all orthodontic residents from across France. The approximately 150 residents met in Rennes, and the SBR (French Society of Orthodontics) led the third-year students in training them in bioprogressive mechanics by treating a case on electrodeont.
A huge thank you to the organizers Damien BREZULIER and Capucine LUCAS, who managed this event masterfully, as well as to the supervisors Veronika DERCSAR, Marie DOCO, Delphine WAGNER, Jacques BOHAR, Stéphane RENAUDIN, Marc Henri NIVET, and Loïc GAUTIER. See you in Montpellier in April 2023!
Then from September 17th to 19th, we will meet in Annecy for the 19th National Conference. Jean-Luc OUHIOUN and Frédéric CHALAS have prepared a particularly enticing program on TMJ and its problems, from diagnosis to treatment, with renowned speakers on the subject.
Two months later, the Orthodontic Days returned to Paris from November 12th to 14th. The 2021 session was a great success with over 2,000 practitioners in attendance. In 2022, the SBR will organize three sessions on:
– “Hypomaxilliness and functional disorders” with the association of the ODF journal,
– “Nose and smile, intimate relationships” with GREAT
– “Language from every angle” with CEPOG
So there are still plenty of opportunities to meet!
For the first time, the SBR has exceeded 800 members, including 141 interns; it's doing well! Let's continue to take care of ourselves and our patients.
Bioprogressively Yours!
Patrick GUEZENEC
Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends,
In 2005, during the national elections, Michel Delamaire, our treasurer, passed the torch to me, and I took over the role. I have therefore fulfilled this mission for the past 16 years with the utmost dedication, and having been elected President of our Society by the various regions last November, I am now passing the torch to Eric Allouch, who I am confident will carry out this task with the same rigor I have shown. Continuity within change. 2021 marks this renewal of the Board, with Hanh Vuong-Pichelin remaining our steadfast secretary.
Thank you for helping Eric with this important task by paying your dues online whenever possible. Our website, through the "My Account" section, allows you to access your invoices and receipts once you have paid online. Save time, money, and paper... nothing but advantages!
Consider putting your photo on the online directory; it's always nicer and more personal to see our correspondents.
2021 was marked by the deaths of numerous orthodontists, including two names familiar to the entire profession: Doctors Bassigny and Vion, both authors of books that served as our bibles in our early days. Dr. Vion and his "little red book" on cephalometry remain a benchmark. Having passed away at the end of November, we haven't yet had the opportunity to dedicate a special tribute to him in this journal. This will be done in the next issue.
The Orthodontics Days made a strong comeback in November with 2,352 registered participants, and the SBR was well represented, actively organizing sessions. Our society was able to hold its two congresses during the COVID years, in Arcachon in 2020 and Cassis in 2021, demonstrating our dynamism. The next congress in Annecy in September 2022 will undoubtedly be a success, leading us directly towards our 50th anniversary in 2023.
Sad news broke just days before Christmas: the passing of Monique Chouvin, president of the CTTD, one of the scientific societies that make up the FFO. This charming and well-liked woman had also been unanimously elected to the FFO's board of directors, succeeding Alain Bery. So many deaths in 2021…
May this new year bring us Health, Happiness and Success in the projects that are dear to our hearts, participate in our meetings, with the joy of meeting in person, as at the November Olympics.
Happy New Year 2022 to all, take care of yourselves and your loved ones.
Bioprogressively your
Patrick GUEZENEC
